Dr. Brady on- New Technology in Heart Health

  • Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the NUMBER ONE PREVENTABLE cause of death in the United States.
  • One of the first symptoms of a Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack) is…death.lipid-subsets
  • CVD often takes decades to develop.
  • Most standard lipid tests (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, VLDL) tell very little about your risk for developing heart disease. Recent studies show that the subsets of HDL, LDL, and VLDL (number, sizes, and types see image) give a much better assessment of your cardiovascular health. This means that a person can have “NORMAL” cholesterol levels and still be at high risk for CVD. The test I use in my office is the Comprehensive Cardiovascular Profile 2.0 by Genova Diagnostics (sometimes called the Vertical Auto Profile or VAP test) (Sample Report).
  • Cholesterol is beneficial. We need it. It helps make up your sex hormones (estrogen, testosterone etc.), absorbs your fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), insulate nerve cells, and the list of benefits continue.
  • Cholesterol is “bad” when it becomes oxidized by free radicals. This happens mainly though inflammation. Common sources of inflammation are:
  1. Chronic infections
  2. Increased phase 1 detoxification in the liver producing free radical intermediates–>phase 2 (if working)–>stool/urine
  3. Food sensitivities
  4. Nutritional insufficiencies (most people in the United States are)
  5. Environmental sensitivities (not necessarily major allergic reactions)- medications, chemicals, molds, pollen, dust etc.
  6. Genetic challenges in methylation- creates destructive molecules such as homocysteine
  7. Dehydration
  8. There are laboratory test available today that expose these problems.
  • Unfortunately, too many of today’s healthcare professionals are trained to “wait” until a health problem has progressed to a certain level before giving it medical attention. At this point your problem is given a name (Myocardial Infarction, Hypertension, etc…). Once “it” has a name, it is given a predetermined treatment, not based on your individual makeup but based on…a book. This is where the field of Functional Medicine shines. My purpose is to identify the those subtle and commonly missed causes of ill health in patients currently suffering and prevent their family members from becoming the next victims.
  • THE ONLY CURE IS PREVENTION! This is why in our clinic we use genomic testing with our families (adults and children). This test checks for changes in segments of DNA. These changed, called Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms or SNP’s, can give us great insight on the LONG TERM risk factors of CVD. The results from this test also help us to develop a life-long dietary plan based on your genetic needs. For cardiovascular health I use the Cardiogenomic Plus test by Genova Diagnostics (Sample Report).
  • Statins (Lescol, Mevacor, Pravachol, Zocor, Crestor, Lipitor, Caduet) can significantly reduce cellular Co-Q10, a potent anti-oxidant, creating more free radicals.

“The superior doctor prevents sickness; the mediocre doctor attends to impending sickness; the inferior doctor treats actual sickness.”We need the “inferior doctors” when acute sickness/trauma shows, but handing them a chronic condition such as CVD, you might as well book your bypass.

It is inaccurate to apply acute methods (i.e. medication) to chronic conditions. If it were true that medications that helped promote and restore healthy human physiology no one would be sick- right? Unfortunately, that is not the case, only nutrition based on INDIVIDUAL NEEDS is powerful enough to make and keep us healthy.

Dr. Brady on Proper Weight Loss

December 31, 2008 Dr. Brady Hurst 1 comment

Read below for more information and tips

www.TrueHealthDC.com

  • Eating less is not the answer to weight loss. Eating less calories can slow overall metabolism and potentially shift the calories you do eat into fat. Eating more will speed your metabolism as long as it comes from good quality foods. If a power plant is not burning its coal then even if the train only brings one car of coal, it’s going to pile up (weight gain).
  • The goal is to maintain a healthy lifestyle not to “go on a diet”. A diet may be used to aggressively break down barriers that keep you from losing weight but what most people want is to live a healthy life, not bounce from diet to diet. A diet is only a stepping stone.
  • The key is baby steps. Whenever there is a time gap between the present moment and the future, anxiety and frustration occur. The brain will try to adapt by thinking, “Let hurry up and get to our final goal because I don’t want to be anxious or frustrated anymore.” This is when you go from not working out or eating right to hitting the gym 6 times a week and eating saltine crackers= failure. Set a SHORT term future goals but don’t be consumed with it. Move on to your next goal WHEN you finish the previous one. Time gaps=frustration=failure. Do what you can NOW not tomorrow. Writing things down will help lessen the mental time gaps.
  • Modify the way you are doing things if you are losing more than 3lbs a week. More than that indicates water loss and that is your worst enemy when trying to lose fat weight.
  • Know that you may feel really bad during the initial phases. Toxins and hormones are stored in fat so when fat breaks down, the toxins/hormones will be released into the blood therefore effecting the rest of the body. Because of this, lab tests should be done to see how well your liver and kidneys can detoxify those toxins and hormones. Additional supplementation may be needed.
  • Supplements can be of extreme value when trying to lose weight. What type and dosages can be determined by simple blood and/or urine test.
  • Having a doctor to optimize weight loss and guide you is recommended. Too often people end up quitting and saying ” it didn’t work for me”. Don’t let that be you.
  • Use us. We are in business for you not because of you. We have developed a TeleHealth Service designed to help people world wide. Our use of advance laboratory testing helps identify any potential blockades that keeps you from losing weight and being healthy in every moment.
  • If you mention this blog post, we will grant a %10 discount off your initial consultation.
  • Below is a testimonial from one of my patients. Please remember to share these videos with others, that how the patient below received the care that “changed her life”.

I am doing fabulously well thanks in large measure to you. I continue to follow the diet you gave to me and exercising regularly (yoga) and I must say, I have never felt better. Actually not bad at all for a woman pushing 60! I will be scheduling an appointment at your clinic for myself in a few months.

You’re so good at what you do. I have to tell you that in all my years I have never been able to eat sensibly. Now it comes naturally to me. You have changed my life and I can’t thank you enough for that.

Dr. Brady on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

November 14, 2008 Dr. Brady Hurst 2 comments

  • Symptoms: Amenorrhea (few or absent periods), infertility due to anovulation (ovaries do not release eggs), Hirsutism (excess body hair), thin scalp hair, acne, weight gain, depression
  • Signs: irritable if meals are skipped, fatigue after meals (eating relieves symptoms), depends on coffee or caffeine to get started in the morning
  • PCOS is triggered by high testosterone levels
  • Insulin creates the production the testosterone
  • Insulin helps lower blood sugar when high
  • Insulin will also cause the liver to produce excess cholesterol. This can further alter hormones since sex hormones (estrogen, testosterone, etc.) are made from cholesterol.
  • Women with insulin resistance and/or diabetes will experience the highest testosterone levels.
  • The key is to control insulin surges. Best signs of insulin surges or insulin resistance- fatigue after meals and/or irritability in between meals.
  • Insulin drives high testosterone, high testosterone drives insulin. This creates a “vicious cycle” that feeds itself. Even though diet and exercise are KEY, breaking that cycle is just as important. There are peer reviewed studies that show specific botanicals and nutrients that help break that cycle.
  • High testosterone is the MOST COMMON hormonal shift in menstruating women.
  • PCOS is the most common cause of infertility in the USA.
  • Simple test can be done in office or remotely to determine the many factors that drive PCOS.
  • Most mainstream healthcare options do not offer this comprehensive approach. For help contact our office.

Our goal is to identify and address the “spider web” of biological dysfunctions that play a role in chronic disease. We provide the most comprehensive care to those with chronic conditions and those who want to prevent chronic conditions, which make up the top ten most common causes of death.  We do this through our home office in Atlanta, Georgia and around the world through our TeleHealth phone consultation service.

Chemical Changes That are Surprisingly Common in Breast Cancer

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During this month, Dr. Brady is giving something special to those concerned about their risk of breast cancer.

About 90% of our healthcare system is geared towards treating cancer after-the-fact. This leaves a meager 10% of clinics, like True Health, to focus on something more important…prevention of breast cancer, the most logical way to win the war on breast cancer (It is very important to remember that tests like mammograms are considered a early detection method, NOT preventive).   Dr. Brady uses state-of-the-art laboratory tests including the 2/16 OHE1 Ratio test and the newly released EstroGenomic Profile, a test that evaluates genetic variations, called SNP’s, that can alter estrogen metabolism (breakdown) leading to a greater risk of breast cancer. Since our nutrition and other environmental exposures ultimately determines our genetic expressions, we can take this information and design a nutritional plan to override those genes, greatly reducing the risk of cancer on an individual level.

Through this month only, we at True Health Center for Functional Medicine are going to wave the initial consultation and examination fee for those concerned about their current risk of breast cancer, a $185 value. Dr. Brady and his staff are doing their part to lower the increasing rates of breast cancer, which is now killing over 500,000 people a year worldwide. Act now so you wont have to react later.

Gene Testing- Who you are Makes all the Difference

I’m sure you have heard it a few time, “I have X, Y, Z condition…It’s genetic!” The fact is that only a few conditions such as Huntington’s Disease, Tay-Sachs Disease, and Down Syndrome are considered genetic disorders.  “What about the rest? I just know that my diabetes, cholesterol issues, sleeping problems, high blood pressure, and the tumor I had removed last week are genetic…my mom had it!”

It’s not that you have a certain gene but it’s the variation of that gene that makes it easier for you to develop a dysfunction that leads to disease. These genetic variations are called Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms or SNP’s. In essence, they are what make you biologically different from your neighbor. When your cells divide they must copy their DNA. They should look exactly the same, however, variations commonly occur that ultimately determines how humans develop diseases and respond to pathogens (things that cause disease), chemicals, drugs, vaccines, and other agents.

Here is an example of a SNP:  Let’s say that a particular gene’s purpose was to process Folic Acid. If you have a genetic variation that causes the way you process Folic Acid, you may need to supplement 500x more Folic Acid just to function correctly. Your run-of-the-mill multi-vitamin or prenatal vitamin won’t cut it. Folic Acid is needed for proper cell division/repair which is a huge problem in cancer patients and women planing to become pregnant. Those with SNP’s that disturb Folic Acid  may also be prone to anemia, cause neurological problems in developing fetuses, and disrupt behavior such as ADD, anxiety disorder, and depression.  Thanks to the Human Genome Project we were able to identify thousands of SNP’s that play a role in a person’s chances to develop diseases.

SNP’s can effect:
•    Hormonal/Endocrine System- Estrogen Positive Cancers, Endometriosis, Pre/Post Menopause  Complications, Osteoporosis, Cardiovascular Disease, Inflammation
•    Cardiac system- Cardiovascular Diseases, Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Oxidative Stress
•    Detoxification System- Cancers, Chronic Fatigue, Adverse Drug Reactions, Allergies
•    Energy Production System- Cancers, Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia,
•    Neurological System- Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Disease, Depression, Anxiety, Insomnia, Seizures, ADD, Autism
•    Structural System- Osteoporosis, Inflammation, Vitamin D Abnormalities
•    Immune System- Allergies, Autoimmune Disease, Cancers

Testing for these genetic variations, or SNP’s, can be done in adulthood as well as childhood. This means that we can now develop a life-long nutritional plan that will offset these potentially deadly SNP’s.  This is a breakthrough, a breakthrough that can accurately show risk of a future disease BEFORE IT EVER STARTS.

True Health and Dr. Brady Hurst now offers testing for SNP’s. With this information, Dr. Brady develops a personalized plan that will give your body what it needs to override these genetic differences and live a long health life with the lowest risk of developing disease.

If you mention this blog post, we will grant a %10 discount off your initial consultation.

Low Vitamin D Levels

August 16, 2008 Dr. Brady Hurst 3 comments

  • Low Vitamin D levels are very common in the United States because of diminished nutrition in our food supply, the overuse of sunscreen, and the overall lack of outdoor activity in the summer and in winter.
  • AT LEAST 15 minutes (30 minutes for African Americans) of direct sunlight or 30 minutes to 1 hour of shade time is required for adequate Vitamin D production. We have not yet evolved enough to produce more Vitamin D with less sunlight. Our prehistoric ancestors lived near the equator receiving direct UV rays and therefore receiving adequate amounts of Vitamin D…and sadly enough, their food supply was also more nutritious than ours today.
  • Low Vitamin D levels substantially increase the risk of a variety of diseases including several cancers, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, infections (such as Candida), multiple sclerosis, and is linked to an increase of death FROM ALL CAUSES.
  • Low Vitamin D levels in children are linked to a higher risk of death from the H1N1 Swine Flu virus.
  • Optimal levels of Vitamin D should read around 50-90 ng/ml. About 90% of my patients show less than 20 ng/ml which is considered an EXTREME DEFICIENCY.
  • Adults and children should be tested once each season. Our office can easily run this test.
  • The majority of us are Vitamin D deficient and should supplement. Vitamin D should be taking in a cod or flax based formula. Vitamin D works best when taken with its co-factors and synergist.
  • I STRESS THAT FULL PERSONAL BALANCE OF ALL VITAMINS, MINERALS, FATTY ACIDS, ENZYMES AND CO-FACTORS ALONG WITH DECREASING THE BURDEN OF HEAVY METALS, VIRAL/BACTERIAL LOADS, AND OXIDATION ARE KEY TO TRULY REGAINING HEALTH.

Our goal here at True Health is to identify the spider web of metabolic dysfunctions that occur in the chronically ill and those of us who are healthy and want to prevent chronic illnesses. We find these dysfunctions through objective laboratory tests. Your personalized plan includes lifestyle, environmental, and dietary changes with an individualized supplement plan.

Because our office has accounts with international laboratories, we are not only able to care for loved ones in-house but now across the world through our unique TeleHealth Service. Finding a good doctor is now made easy.
